At Avenues, we took immense pride regarding our covers (we were ‘Qantas Best Cover in New Zealand’ finalists 2009 and 2010. This particular issue proved difficult and with one day before going to press we persuaded Anika Moa to strike a pose. The photographer, Joe Johnson and I grabbed an old armchair from the nearby Press building and promptly got to work. Having always prepared his images before passing onto design, Joe was most reluctant to give me the memory card then and there, but time was against us. I spent the afternoon and early evening mocking up variations and was in constant email dialogue with Anika and Joe. I think the final image was easily the best, despite having to photoshop the Cathedral to be in frame... Phew!
BEHIND THE COVER
In late 2013, Alisa Gilbert, a colleague and friend via the Tommy Bolin Memorial Fund, asked if I would like to design a CD Cover and booklet for a young American blues protegy, Campbell Davis. The title of the release was ‘Howl at the Moon’ and with an incredibly tight deadline and not much to go on, I came up with some, well, rather ‘obvious’ ideas which at least got the ball rolling. Someone in the Campbell camp had spotted an illustration by a German (tattoo, I think?) artist and from that I commissioned New Zealand illustrator and friend, Trevor Dodd to rework it in a format for me to manipulate and photoshop. Trevor (as always) responded immediately, and after a bit of international ping pong between Campbell's crew, Alisa and myself we produced a lovely ‘minimalist’ CD cover and mini booklet. Of note, at the same time, Alisa introduced me (albeit, from afar) to photographer Scott Butner, who took some stunning shots to promote Campbell. Many of his shots appear on the promotional slideshow I did (shown below ‘Sold’)
Below is a very random selection of ideas (OF MANY), some very formative, some the finished product, showing the process unfolding. I included the shots that my then 12 year old son HAD (not too forcibly) to quickly take for a positional idea. All for the sake of art, haha!
